Technician installing a smart thermostat in South Carolina

Fan: auto, not on

With the fan set to 'on', the blower keeps running between cooling cycles and blows the moisture sitting on the coil right back into the house. Auto lets the coil drain.

Setpoints that work

Most homes are comfortable at 74 to 76 when humidity is under 50 percent. Raise it 4 to 6 degrees while you are away rather than turning the system off; a hot, humid house takes hours to recover.

Smart thermostats and heat pumps

A smart thermostat that is not configured for a heat pump can bring on expensive auxiliary heat every time it makes a big temperature change. Have it set up correctly.

If the house still feels sticky

The system may be oversized, low on charge or the ducts may leak. A whole-home dehumidifier fixes humidity independently of temperature and lets you run the AC warmer.
